In 1878 the German breeders decide to make a first attempt to group for improving the breed of German shepherd. They decided to create a morphologically homogeneous breed.

Ssince 1910, imports of these dogs in France has been increasing.

The AS could descend from Hektor Linksrhein, later renamed Horand von Grafath, which was gray-haired set long :

Note that the grandfather of this dog, Greif was white, it would be the origin of the German Shepherd (beauty, work, long-haired), the White Swiss Shepherd and AS.

Some bloodlines of the AS come straight from East Germany (DDR lines).

The military wanted to select standards powerful dogs, stocky, lively, alert, fearless, loyal, confident and with great intelligence!
Their health should be flawless. When it was doubtful, the dogs were removed from the reproduction. These standards also included the ability to work, by the endurance, tenacity, climbing ability on the straight walls, robustness and flair for research.
These dogs were exposed to harsh climate and extreme physical conditions for genetically selecting the most resistant to diseases dogs. Each range was thoroughly checked (teeth, ears, coat, temperament) worth inspecting a military piece ...
These dogs were dark with dark pigmentation and a strong backbone.

This hard regulation created the sheepdog DDR, including about 1,000 of them were used in border guard.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, the patrols not having to guard the borders got rid of these dogs, selling, abandoning or even euthanizing them. Some years later, the whole world is interested in this breed of dog, and very few farmers kept these bloodlines and this selection.

The big difference with West Germany, is that they are more geared to selecting a beautiful dog (black and tan, sloping back, angulation more pronounced . This breed has demonstrated many qualities was much in demand worldwide.
Thus, to satisfy the demands dog, breeders did undergo to race higher inbreeding percentage, responsible for the appearance of less robust dogs, leaving aside their character. So there appeared physical changes (smaller dogs, finer, back arched, etc.) ...

Today, one of the many goals of the UCFAS is to continue to select healthy dogs, hardy, healthy, balanced, temperamental, intelligent, sharp but affectionate, protective and very close to their master.

The history of Altdeutscher schäferhund tells us that the selection of breeding in East Germany was made on the health and character of dogs primarily a right back and a thick pile under were required of them. The colors of dresses had so little importance, unlike other German Shepherd lines more focused on selecting a type of dog "beauty" mainly black and tan with a sloping back ...

Today, the Altdeutsche Schäferhund dresses are very varied in color.
